International Students
Freiburg is a very popular destination for students. This means that each semester, particularly in the winter semester, there is a significant shortage of housing.
As soon as the application procedure starts, your home university must first send your nomination to the Freiburg Erasmus Office via erasmus@zv.uni-freiburg.de
Thereafter, a link to the Online Registration form will be sent to you via email from the Erasmus office in Freiburg. You can apply for an accommodation in the student dormitory through the Online-Registration form in your application portal.
Application Deadlines and Extensions
Please note that the application form must be submitted to the International Office
between April 15th - June 15th for the winter term
between September 30th - November 30th for the summer term
Applications that are received after these dates cannot be considered by the International Office.
Rental periods for a room are October 1 - March 1 for the winter semester and April 1 - September 30 for the summer semester. Note that you must rent and pay the room for the entirety of the six months, regardless of the length of your stay or duration of your scholarship.
Please take note of the above mentioned deadlines!
Please look for private housing in addition to submitting a dormitory room application. Considering areas located at the outskirts of Freiburg for a room will go a long way to help you. Many nearby communities, such as Gundelfingen, Denzlingen, Schallstadt, and Bad Krozingen have a solid public transportation connection to Freiburg. These smaller population centers are all between 5 and 12 minutes from Freiburg by bus or train.
International Master's Programs
International Master's Programs have their own housing contingent, thus master students are asked to please contact their degree program coordinator for the housing application.
Rental periods are
October 1st to March 31st for winter term
April 1st to September 30th for summer term
Note that once a dormitory room is rented out to you, the monthly rent must be paid for the duration of six months, regardless of the length of your stay or duration of your scholarship.
Please take note of the above mentioned deadlines!
Since the International Office has a limited contingent for dorm rooms, we would advise you to also apply for a room directly with the Student Union (Studierendenwerk). The Studierendenwerk's website has a list of the dorms.
Due to the high number of applicants, the student union is unable to provide a room for each student. Therefore, it is important for you to take the initiative in searching for a room in the private market parallel to your student dorm application as early as possible.
